Qwirkle

Activity/Supplies Location: Beach House (inside)

Qwirkle is a strategic board game that combines elements of tile placement and pattern recognition. Here’s a description of how to play Qwirkle:

  1. Setup:
    • Place all the Qwirkle tiles face-down in a bag or pile.
    • Each player draws six tiles from the bag to start the game.
    • Choose a player to go first.
  1. Gameplay:
    • On each turn, a player must either add tiles to the play area or exchange tiles from their hand.
    • Tiles can be placed in a line, similar to creating a run in Rummy, with each tile having the same shape or color but different from the others in that line.
    • When placing tiles, they must be connected to the existing tiles on the board, either in a straight line or at right angles.
    • Players can create new lines or expand existing ones, but they cannot merge lines or split them into separate sections.
  1. Scoring:
    • After placing tiles, the player earns points based on the number of tiles they played in a single line.
    • Each tile in the line scores one point, and additional points are awarded if the line created a “Qwirkle” (a line of six tiles with no duplicates in either color or shape).
    • Completed lines can be scored horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally.
    • The player then replenishes their hand by drawing new tiles to bring their total back to six.
  1. Gameplay Continuation:
    • Play continues clockwise, with each player taking turns to add tiles or exchange tiles until the bag is empty and one player has placed their last tile.
  1. Final Scoring and Winner:
    • At the end of the game, once a player has played all their tiles, the remaining players count the point value of the tiles left in their hand.
    • The points are subtracted from their total score.
    • The player with the highest score after subtracting the remaining tiles’ points wins the game.

Qwirkle is a game that requires strategic thinking, planning, and recognizing patterns. It can be played by two to four players and is suitable for players of various ages. Enjoy the challenge of creating lines and scoring points in Qwirkle!
